THE EFFECTS OF SOLIDARITY AND CARE IN CHILDHOOD AND COMMUNITIES.

At Capita, we work with elected officials, philanthropists, community leaders, and others to help build a picture of what political and economic systems can look like with solidarity, care, and relationships at their core.

Solidarity and connection are foundational to human flourishing. Our current political and economic paradigm prioritizes wealth accumulation and growth over values of care and solidarity, which poses a major obstacle to this vision.

Given the prevailing political, cultural, and economic headwinds, many people feel that they have lost a shared sense of agency in their lives, resulting in anxiety, insecurity, and loneliness– including parental loneliness. These societal challenges manifest in depression, addiction, violence, and divisive politics, eroding trust in institutions and exacerbating existing policy challenges.

All this impacts our support systems, relationships, families, and children. Restructuring our political and economic order to prioritize families is one of the most effective ways to build healthy, resilient communities.

Capita’s work currently focuses on several key areas:

  • What are the solutions to counter loneliness, anxiety, polarization and insecurity, including how this affects parents and influences the flourishing of young children?
  • How do you build a just and humane, next-generation child care system that supports flourishing?
  • Additionally, we are highlighting critical policy areas that need more attention, such as support for Stay-at-Home Parents and the impact of private equity investment in child care.
