The Freedom to Start
Join us for a virtual, nonpartisan convening hosted by Capita and Sociopúblico, with support from New America’s Better Life Lab, to discuss reframing and reclaiming the debate around declining birth rates and family formation. This convening will also help set the stage for an in-person event in the future.
Declining birth rates and family formation are among the most consequential issues of our time, with profound implications for nearly every social and economic system. Around the world, a persistent gap exists between the desire to form families and the realities that make doing so difficult. Scholars and governments across the political spectrum have documented these trends, and the topic has become increasingly prominent in the media.
Yet few spaces exist where a truly diverse group can come together to explore these issues—and the underpinnings of a responsive policy and cultural agenda—in a welcoming environment bounded by the affirmative values of solidarity and care and the explicit rejection of discrimination based on gender, racial, ethnic, religious, or socioeconomic identity.
We believe that a more just and humane world, one shaped by an abiding commitment to the common good, demands generous hospitality to children, assistance to those wishing to form families, and sustained support for all families. This convening offers an opportunity not only to begin considering questions of how to slow or reverse birth rate declines and adaptation to a low-birth era, but also to imagine and create the enabling conditions for all people to fully experience the joy and love of their desired family life.
