Systems Mythology: Recoloring the Stories That Shape Renewal
Think Beyond is Capita’s annual leadership development journey for global impact leaders. The theme for Think Beyond 2026 is Renewalโexploring what it takes to shape more creative, just, and care-full futures in a time when existing models no longer suffice.
Beneath many of today’s technological, economic, political, and environmental challenges lies a deeper question of meaning. The stories that once helped us make sense of the world are increasingly being questioned, yet the narratives that might replace them have not fully emerged.
For leaders, the ability to recognise and work with these underlying narratives is an important capacity for navigating the current moment and the time ahead.
If renewal requires more than improving existing systems, it may also require reimagining the stories upon which those systems are built. What new stories, assumptions, and possibilities might help us navigate what comes next? And what role might creativity and imagination play in helping us bridge between the world that is fading and the one that is trying to emerge?
Session Overview
In this interactive Think Beyond conversation, Dylan Hendricks will introduce Systems Mythology, a framework developed by the Institute for the Future.
Systems Mythology explores the hidden narratives, assumptions, symbols, and archetypes embedded within our institutions, organizations, products, and ways of working. It offers a practical lens for understanding why systems behave as they do, where they may be out of balance, and how new possibilities can emerge.
Rather than focusing only on trends or technologies, this session will invite participants to explore the deeper stories shaping the systems they care about and to consider what renewal might require in a time of profound transition.
Participants will have an opportunity to experiment with the Systems Mythology framework themselves, applying it to real-world systems and challenges.
