Care & The Common Good
Please join Capita for an in-person seminar exploring the history and future of care, caregiving, and the common good in the U.S. The event combines the tradition of the Socratic seminar with Capita’s commitment to interdisciplinary, cross-ideological dialogue.
Amid demographic change, an ongoing child care crisis, increasing demands for elder care, and a growing sense that a divided America is deeply unsettled, this timely gathering will examine how we can imagine a different, more stable, and flourishing future for families and their communities—one rooted in care and directed toward the common good.
Guided by Capita CEO Joe Waters and renowned writer Elissa Strauss, participants will engage with historical and contemporary texts that provide texture to our public conversations on care, family life, work, parenthood, democracy, the motivating ideals of our common life, and our shared future.
This seminar offers a rare professional development opportunity to:
- Gain new perspectives on care and its dynamic relationship with broader societal trends.
- Explore why and how we need to renew the common good in politics, economics, and civic life.
- Build new connections with other participants.
- Leave with practical ideas to address complex challenges in your work and community.

Capita Seminars: Spaces for Reflection, Exploration, and Connection

Deep Exploration of Societal Transformations
Capita Seminars offer participants the chance to immerse themselves in a deep exploration of the key social, demographic, cultural, technological, environmental, and economic transformations shaping our societies.
From the role of care and belonging to questions of identity and the evolution of democracy, these generative spaces encourage thoughtful reflection and dialogue, inviting participants to connect history, the present, and imagined futures. By sparking fresh insights, they help illuminate complex social issues and open pathways to explore how to support family and community flourishing.
Diverse Perspectives and Collaborative Dialogue
Each seminar brings together individuals from diverse disciplines, ideologies, and backgrounds to explore the intersections of knowledge, social imagination, values, and aspirations for the future. Through meaningful dialogue and deep engagement, participants gain fresh perspectives and actionable insights they can integrate into their work.
By connecting historical and contemporary contexts, these seminars help equip participants to navigate today’s challenges and envision new possibilities for their organizations and communities.
For example, in May 2024, “Becoming an Inclusive Republic” was hosted by the Aspen Institute Socrates Program, Capita, and Openfields, in Greenville, South Carolina. The seminar was facilitated by Cordell Carter II.
