Care in America: Historical Perspectives, Future Visions
registerRooted in the tradition of the Socratic seminar and a shared commitment to interdisciplinary, cross-ideological dialogue, please join Capita for a generative seminar exploring the history and possible futures for care and caregiving in America.
In the face of demographic change, an ongoing child care crisis, and an aging population demanding more and more care, this conversation is among the most timely for those working to imagine a different, more stable, and flourishing future for families and their communities.
Together, we’ll engage with historical and contemporary texts that provide texture to our public conversations on child care, family life, work, parenthood, and our collective future.
Participation in this seminar is limited to 15 people, so we are grateful for your speedy response. Readings will be distributed by email beforehand.

Capita Seminars
Capita Seminars are designed as generative spaces for reflection and exploration. We believe that engaging thoughtfully with history, the present, and possible futures enriches our understanding of complex social issues and opens pathways for families and communities to flourish.
Our seminars bring together participants from diverse disciplines, ideologies, and backgrounds, fostering rich and meaningful dialogue. Our goal is to create a unique environment where insights from historical texts meet contemporary perspectives, giving participants the time and space to reflect on today’s societal challenges, draw on lessons from the past, and envision potential paths forward. Each seminar offers the opportunity to explore the intersections of knowledge, social imagination, values, and future aspirations.
For example, in May 2024, “Becoming an Inclusive Republic” was hosted by the Aspen Institute Socrates Program, Capita, and Openfields, in Greenville, South Carolina. The seminar was facilitated by Cordell Carter II.
