Our values

Capita’s work is guided by a set of values that are front and center in all that we do.

Human dignity

We affirm the inherent and equal dignity of every person.

Solidarity & the common good

We’re not in this alone. The coming decades must be shaped by a deeper commitment to strengthening connections, collaboration, and relationships.

Democracy

All people and their voices matter. We believe in extending more power to more people in more ways.

Deep hospitality

We are literally and figuratively welcoming—opening our space to others and accepting their diverse opinions.

Exploration

We value curiosity, free expression, openness to exploring new ideas and perspectives, and intellectual independence. While we are excited by the new, we also wish to explore, interrogate, and understand the past. Where the past offers wisdom, we will embrace it as guidance for the future.

Good work

We aim to give our best effort every day and support the excellent work of others through fair partnership and just remuneration.

Capita has an ambitious global vision: a future in which families can flourish in just, peaceful, and prosperous communities on a healthy, safe, and clean planet. This vision is central to all of our work.

We call for a society that provides the foundational requirements of human flourishing (education, nurturance, and health; artistic, cultural, and economic assets; mental and spiritual well-being; and the ability to contribute meaningfully as citizens) to all people, and in which all people contribute to their fullest capacity—regardless of class, race, creed, gender, sexuality, ability, or age. Society need not be a ruthless competition for scarce resources.

But today, not everyone has the same opportunities to flourish. So often, the needs of children and families are excluded from how we shape our political, economic, and social systems. Rhetoric, policies, and ideas are biased towards adults, even though it is our children who will shape societies in decades to come. Systemic discrimination, marginalization, exclusion, and dehumanization prevent society from meeting the needs of children and families. This is particularly acute in communities who are othered and for those furthest from opportunity.

Rooted in our vision of loving, cooperative, and just societies, we will work in solidarity with families and communities. Together, we will design and promote creative approaches that include everyone, compatible with generational wisdom, for advancing human flourishing. We will contribute our effort to dismantling historic marginalization and dehumanization, work to establish equitable access to resources and opportunities, and put the future of children and their families front and center.

We believe that wisdom takes many forms and emerges best in a polyphonic chorus of voices. We want to broaden and deepen our work by sharing knowledge from different contexts. We want our communications to acknowledge and celebrate a wealth of stories, voices, experiences, and ideas. We want our team, our partners, and our leaders to embrace the diversity of our world.

Our commitment to being nonpartisan & independent

Consistent with our mission, Capita’s employees, contractors, and other stakeholders may provide analysis and recommendations to elected officials and candidates for public office. However, employees, contractors, and other stakeholders may not participate in partisan political activities on behalf of the organization.

In the spirit of creativity and the free exploration of ideas, Capita commissions products from diverse viewpoints, tackling deep, systemic, root-cause issues that remain underexplored but are crucial to the flourishing of families and their communities. The products we commission are intended to contribute to a public dialogue and foster debate. The views of any one product represent those of the author and not necessarily the views of the organization, staff, Board of Directors, funders, or other stakeholders. While staff and senior fellows may express support for specific legislation, they do so in a personal capacity, not as representatives of Capita.
